Watch: 'We belong there' – Daniel Ricciardo delighted after best qualifying of the season with P4 for Miami GP Sprint
Peter Casey-USA TODAY Sports

Daniel Ricciardo quickly stole the spotlight at the Miami GP weekend after securing P4 in Qualifying for the Sprint race. The Australian driver had a difficult start to the 2024 season as compared to his teammate Yuki Tsunoda . Ricciardo failed to showcase any impressive results good enough to keep him around for the next season. However, results like these are exactly what the 34-year-old needs to continue in the sport.

Daniel Ricciardo drove amazingly well at the Miami GP‘s circuit in the VCARB0. The 34-year-old will start the Sprint from the second row and potentially aim for a podium finish. Ricciardo and his race engineer Pierre Hamelin were very pleased with the results, and rightly so! The duo was spotted enjoying a funny yet encouraging talk after the qualifying results.

Oh mate, I'm so happy for you. Pierre Hamelin told Daniel Ricciardo on team radio

Additionally, even Ricciardo did not stop himself from some words of encouragement after the P4 result. The 34-year-old claimed that the team ‘belonged’ in the front of the grid after the results. Hence, the Miami GP will be exciting to watch the Australian battle it out and fend off against the drivers behind. RB has showcased some improvements in the Chinese GP as well. The Miami GP could finally be a comeback for the Aussie driver.

Great. So nice, we belong at the front. I'm so happy for everyone. Daniel Ricciardo said on the team radio

Daniel Ricciardo didn’t expect a second-row start for the Sprint race at Miami

Daniel Ricciardo definitely didn’t expect such a great start to the sprint race after the team’s struggles. The 34-year-old opened up regarding the performance and how it was ‘unexpected’. Ricciardo felt that his performance in SQ2 was really good and the final lap in SQ3 was worthy of a P5 start. However, the Aussie scored a P4 start and the entire team rejoiced at this awesome result.

I know it’s in me but did I expect to do a second-row start? Probably not that good. I felt really good in SQ2 and I knew that lap would be good enough for SQ3. I think at that point I was P5 and in my head, I was thinking ‘P5 would be really nice for SQ3’ and then we got P4. Daniel Ricciardo said, as reported by grandprix247.com.

Driving around the circuit was ‘wild’ as per the Australian driver. Although Ricciardo scored good laps, it was difficult to manage clean laps under his belt. Regardless, the 34-year-old driver continued to push himself to score better results. Hence, the Italian team alongside the Honey Badger were proud of what they achieved for the Sprint race in Miami.

It was wild. The laps were good but it’s hard to be really clean around here, it was a tricky track. Both laps I kissed the wall, I was definitely pushing. I’m very proud of what I did today but also the team has been bringing upgrades the last few races. Daniel Ricciardo noted.

RB will bring in multiple updates to the challenger to get some good results. The Chinese GP also saw some good performance from Ricciardo, only if Lance Stroll hadn’t collided with the Australian. Hence, the Miami GP will see a redemption for the 34-year-old. The team needs some good points to extend the lead over the rival teams.
