Chicago Cubs Place Nico Hoerner on 10-Day IL, Recall Miles Mastrobuoni
David Banks-USA TODAY Sports

The Chicago Cubs have placed Nico Hoerner on the 10-day IL with a left hamstring strain. The move is retroactive to May 9, the last time Hoerner appeared in a game.

Hoerener has been off to a hot start to his 2023 campaign. The 22-year-old is slashing an impressive .303/.348/.395 and has driven in 19 runs so far in 165 plate appearances.

With Hoerner hitting the IL, the Cubs have recalled Miles Mastrobuoni from Triple-A Iowa. Mastrobuoni had a short stint with the big-league club earlier this season when he appeared in eight games for the Cubs in April. In those contests, the middle infielder slashed .200/.200/.250 in 20 plate appearances.

Additional Roster Moves

Alongside Mastrobuoni, left-handed pitcher Brandon Hughes is also joining the Cubs active roster. Hughes has been officially activated from the 15-day IL. The lefty went on the shelf with left knee inflammation after throwing just 5.2 innings in April. He currently sports a 3.43 ERA with nine strikeouts over those 5.2 innings.

In order to make room for Hughes, right-handed reliever Javier Assad has been optioned to Triple-A Iowa.
